Ketosis diets help many people to lose weight and improve their health. But, the field often gets confusing, especially when you first get started. One of the most common questions is: What is keto coffee?
Many keto dieters talk about keto coffee regularly, while others might refer to Bulletproof coffee instead.
So, what is this coffee? Is it something that you should be drinking regularly?
What is Keto Coffee?
There are two ways to define keto coffee.
The first is simply any coffee that you can have on a keto diet. This basically means that you’re avoiding any extra carbs (so, no sugar and many creamers are excluded too). Coffee itself is keto anyway. You only start to see problems with additional ingredients.

Typical ingredients include coffee, butter (or ghee) and either coconut oil or MCT oil. That’s just the rough approach. There are countless individual recipes out there, each with their own variations. Some of them change the ingredients, while others add in extra components.
The end result is a healthy addition to your diet, one that supports weight loss.
Keto Coffee vs Bulletproof Coffee
Keto coffee sounds a lot like Bulletproof coffee, doesn’t it?
If you’re new to the field, Bulletproof coffee includes three components:
There is one main difference between bulletproof and keto coffee – Bulletproof is strict. You’re meant to make Bulletproof coffee exactly as the company describes. That includes using their coffee beans, which are promoted as healthier.
In contrast, keto coffee is much more flexible.
You can choose which ingredients you include and which ones you miss out. This lets you tailor the drink to your own diet and your needs.
Besides, the strict requirements of Bulletproof coffee aren’t really helpful. Take Brain Octane Oil as an example. It may have some advantages over regular MCT oil, but the benefits seem to be minor. It’s also a fairly expensive oil.
How to Make Keto Coffee
The basic version of keto coffee is simple to make, as you can see in the video below.
You’re mostly just adding the ingredients together and mixing them. To do that, you’ll need a blender of some type. Immersion blenders are the most common approach but there are other options too.
You also need to consider the ingredients you want.
Which Butter or Ghee to Choose
Most keto coffee recipes will use some type of butter or ghee. Many bloggers suggest grass-fed alternatives. As these have a better balance of fatty acids than conventional butter and ghee.
For butter, the brand Kerrygold is often recommended. But, there are other good companies too. Similarly, there are various high-quality grass-fed ghee brands.
You can make keto coffee with salted or unsalted butter. Most people prefer unsalted and that’s the best place to start. Still, if you’re particularly fond of savory food, you might enjoy salted butter instead.
MCT Oil or Coconut Oil
Bulletproof coffee calls for MCT oil only (ideally Brain Octane Oil). But, keto coffee often uses coconut oil instead.
Of the two, MCT oil is often easier to use, because it is liquid at room temperature. It also has a milder flavor.
If you enjoy coconut anyway, the flavor of coconut oil may be more appealing. Alternatively, you may already have coconut oil in your cupboard. After all, it is useful for cooking.
The best answer is just to try them both (not at the same time!). Everyone has different taste preferences, so what works for someone else may not suit you.
In both cases, look for oil that has been through minimal processing. Phrases like organic and unrefined are good indicators. You can keep an eye on any reviews to find out what other people think.
Adding in Flavor
Some people like their keto coffee simple, just coffee, coconut oil and butter. But, many of us want some extra flavoring, like the following choices:
- Vanilla extract. This is an easy way to make your coffee taste interesting. You can even make your own vanilla extract, using vanilla beans and vodka.
- Cinnamon. Cinnamon is one of the simplest ways to add flavor. Many people prefer this over using low-carb sweeteners.

- Low-carb syrups. There are many low-carb syrups on the market and these can make your coffee taste good too. Most bloggers recommend leaving these out, but they are an option. Just make sure you pick ones that are low in carbs.
- Low-carb sweeteners. You can also turn to options like stevia or erythritol if you need more sweetness in your coffee.
- Raw cacao. This is a perfect addition for anyone who loves mocha. Besides, cacao has health benefits of its own.
- Pink Himalayan salt. Adding salt won’t appeal to everyone, but some people do find that it creates a great balance of flavors.
There are also other ingredients you can consider. Some of these offer health benefits, while others may alter the texture of your finished beverage.
- Heavy whipping cream. This cream is another source of fat. It also alters the texture of your drink, making it rich and creamy.
- Collagen. You can also add in collagen powder. This is mainly for the health benefits that collagen offers.
- Exogenous ketones. This supplement is often used on a ketone diet. There are many ways to include the ketones and adding them to coffee is one option.

What About Iced Keto Coffee?
Bulletproof coffee is typically served hot, as is keto coffee. You can’t really make iced keto coffee either, as the butter and coconut oil both solidify as the temperature decreases.

So, why add extra fat into your coffee anyway? The idea does sound a little odd at first glance. Still, there are powerful reasons for doing so.

You’re getting much more energy from keto coffee, compared to your regular coffee.

MCTs are also linked to improved concentration and decreased stress. Both aspects can make your day much easier. This is partly why so many people love keto coffee first thing in the morning.

Having the right macro balance is critical on a keto diet. This often means that somewhere between 60% and 75% of your calories come from fat, while you’re only getting 5% to 10% from carbs.
Your specific macros will vary, based on the guide that you’re following and your own needs. But, whatever your macros are, you’ll need to be focusing on fat for energy.

These aspects are fine if you’re making coffee at home and have time to spare. If you’re away from the house or in a hurry, the process mightn’t seem worth it.
Some products offer ways around these issues.
- One example is Bulletproof Coffee Cold Brew. This is a prepacked product and comes in various flavors (a similar style to Premier Protein Shakes). One version has collagen protein as well.
- Bulletproof also has a product called InstaMix. This simply contains Brain Octane Oil and powdered butter. It can then be mixed into coffee for an easier drink.
- The direct marketing company It Works! also has a product that’s simply called Keto Coffee, which is a powder. Diet Spotlight reviewed this, finding that the coffee has relatively few reviews and high caffeine content. Key ingredients are coffee powder, green coffee bean extract, grass-fed butter powder and collagen peptides.
These are just a few options. There are many others. The style can work well if you want something easier to prepare. Just make sure you choose the product carefully. Some may rely on additives or extra ingredients.
Do You Need Keto Coffee?
This type of hot drink is a great addition to a keto diet, but it isn’t essential. If you don’t like the idea of adding butter and/or MCT oil to your coffee – you don’t need to.
Plenty of people simply drink regular coffee on a keto diet. Others focus on low-carb additions, such as sugar-free syrups, stevia or erythritol.
You can just skip coffee too. Some people prefer tea anyway. There are plenty of non-coffee variations on Bulletproof too, like the following examples:
